I remember the night it all fell apart in my town was a warm evening. The sun had just recently gone down and the street lamps were coming on. I had just gotten out of the bar and was on my way back to my apartment. As I climbed the narrow staircase which led to my room my cell phone buzzed to life. I answered it and was met by the roar of a crowd and the sound of chaos. Through the noise I made out the yelling voice of my friend Luke but couldn’t tell what he was saying. It sounded like he had wound up in a fight at the bar so I quickly hung up and headed back to the bar.
As I exited the building I was confronted by a bustling crowd that almost knocked me over. They were hurrying in the opposite direction of the bar, so I climbed up on a metal fence near an alley to see what they were running from. As I looked down the street toward the bar I saw several figures stumbling down the street after the crowd. They struck out violently at anyone within reach. As they advanced toward my position I saw one particularly tall and burly man from the crowd turn to face them. He swung at the first figure to get within range but as it collided the figure grabbed his arm and bit into his fist. The man yelled in pain but was quickly drowned out by the other figures encircling him, mauling and ripping him apart.
Once his body stopped twitching the figures once again took up their slow pursuit. Some dispersed to the sides of the street and began breaking street lamps. I wasn’t sure what to do but figured that these demented individuals would leave me alone if I hid until morning. So I ran back up the stairs to my apartment and locked myself in my room. I looked out of the front window and watched as the figures went from light to light extinguishing them all. I followed suit and turned out the lights in my room. Soon my whole street was enveloped in total darkness.
I remember falling asleep to the sound of screams outside with my door barricaded. I held a steak knife in one hand and my 9-iron in the other wondering if this was all just a dream induced by large quantities of alcohol. Boy was I due to wake up to a surprise…
